Following the success of our Young Photographer competition in 2017, we’re excited to announce its return for 2018 with an incredible prize.
This year, our winner will be invited to attend HMA18 Best Festival finalist Bloodstock Festival for a day, with a friend, where they will meet with HMA17 Best Photographer (and HMA18 finalist) Ben Gibson for a one-to-one masterclass. They’ll then be given a photo pass to get stuck in alongside some of heavy music’s most revered snappers, before heading back to meet Ben for a chat about their shots and some expert advice on image processing. In Ben’s words, “We will go through everything from technique to editing to delivering to clients in the quickest possible time.”
And that’s not all – the winner will also receive two tickets to the Heavy Music Awards at KOKO, London on Thursday 23 August.
Ben, who has risen to the top of the game with work for some of the biggest rock publications on earth, said, “When I was in education, there was never an opportunity to be guided in music photography, it was always too far out of the comfort zone of my tutors or often somewhat looked down upon. I had to find my own feet. There was never opportunities to work alongside someone with actual real world experience. The guests speakers in which the tutors always brought in were often old, out of touch and never really offered any guidance for the real world and how to actually make it a career. Because of this, I am more than happy to team up with The HMAs to give someone the opportunity of a leg up and pass on any skills and pointers for working in the real world as a music photographer.”
Bloodstock Festival Director Vicky Hungerford added, “We are very pleased and proud to be offering the winner of this the opportunity to capture Bloodstock in all its glory! Supporting up and coming talent is what we love to be involved in and the HMAs are highlighting some superb new talent!”
How to Enter
As in 2017, entry is open to anyone aged 18-21 (as of today, 13 July 2018).
To enter, simply email a photo you have taken at a live show, along with your name, email address, the name of the band, the venue and the date of the show, to [email protected], with the subject YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHER 2018, before 5pm on Thursday 19 July.
All qualifying entries will then be shared as a gallery on the HMA Facebook page, with the most liked image at 5pm on Monday 6 August being crowned winner.
We’d like to express our sincere gratitude to both Ben Gibson and the team at Bloodstock for making this happen.
Please note: the prize does not include any travel, accommodation or hospitality for either Bloodstock or the Heavy Music Awards. The winner will be required to provide their own photographic equipment. There is no alternative prize should our winner be unable to attend either event. The judges’ decision is final. Heavy Group Ltd reserves the right to withdraw entries without notice or published reason, and, should circumstances dictate, to amend or cancel the prize without notice or published reason.
Young Photographer of the Year 2017
The inaugural competition saw almost 80,000 unique visitors view photos taken by ten photographers aged 21 or below on the HMA Facebook page, with the image receiving the most ‘likes’ crowned winner.
That honour belonged to Nathan Robinson for his shot of Trivium’s Matt Heafy. Nathan was invited along to HMA17 to shoot the show alongside some of the finest professional photographers in the business.
Our congratulations to the finalists – Abby Smith, Alexandros Costa, Cerys Donnelly, Daniel McAusland, Olli Appleyard, Ollie Wood, Sarah Jayne Smith, Shaun Gregson and Tyla Trafford Reeves-Vane.
