Callum’s fervour for all things heavy stemmed from hearing Cowboys From Hell on a skate video when he was 11. This prompted him to raid his brother’s Roadrunner laden CD collection and he hasn’t looked back since. He has been a vocalist in various bands, most notably Empires Fade, with which he recorded a five track EP and took part in multiple European tours. He studied journalism at the University of Lincoln, basing his dissertation on the representation of black metal in the media. The degree led him to write for several publications including Team Rock, uDiscover, Subba Cultcha, Power Play and Dead Press!, interviewing the likes of Vinnie Paul, Tom Araya, Devin Townsend and many more. After a stint as a marketing co-ordinator at a local college, he moved to London to do a marketing internship with the London Symphony Orchestra. Following this and some small assistant roles at Nuclear Blast and Big Scary Monsters, he then became a press assistant at leading global music business communications consultancy, Name PR. At Name PR, he worked publicity across various venues, festivals, artists, labels and industry bodies. His current role as communications manager at Universal Music Group sees him dealing with some of the world’s biggest international artists, labels, brands and industry executives on a daily basis.
“I’m really pleased to be involved with the Heavy Music Awards in its inaugural year. In a landscape that typically portrays heavy music and its followers as something to be mocked, it’s great to see a new establishment like the Heavy Music Awards has come along to give our world the credibility and appreciation it deserves. The artists, labels, journalists, photographers, PRs, managers, promotors, bookers and venues that form the foundations of our scene work tirelessly to ensure that the fans get the very best the heavy music has to offer on a global scale, and their efforts warrant recognition and praise. Watch it go!”
